Catharina’s Saints was commissioned by the Harmonie Sint-Catharina of Kortessem (Belgium) in celebration of its 175th anniversary. The work is a tribute not only to the ensemble’s long-standing tradition, unity, and rich musical heritage, but also to the many volunteers whose dedication and passion make it possible for young musicians to explore, create, and share the joy of music together. The piece opens with a broad and ceremonial theme introduced by the flutes and clarinets. Trumpets and saxophones soon join this motive, enriching its majestic character. The theme gradually develops, supported by a lively and syncopated accompaniment that drives the music forward with energy and purpose. As the theme reaches full expression, it transforms into a joyful and elegant waltz, bringing a lighter and celebratory atmosphere to the music. A spirited 2/4 passage follows, leading into a lively 4/4 section filled with fast-moving, energetic lines. From this lively moment, the music shifts toward a noble and expansive character, returning to the original ceremonial theme. The work concludes with a glorious and triumphant ending, celebrating 175 years of musical tradition, and the enduring joy that music brings to both performers and audience alike.
