The original idea for The Eagle’s Flight was inspired by a video in which a camera was placed above the head of an eagle. The footage offers a rare and impressive perspective of this majestic bird as it flies and glides effortlessly through the air. The work was composed for Glenn Van Looy (euphonium solo) and brass quintet. Later versions followed for concert band (CD recording with the Royal Band of the Belgian Air Force) and brass band, with which the Valaisia Brass Band participated in the World Music Competition in Kerkrade in 2022 and won the soloist prize. The journey begins with just three wing beats to full flight, captured in the asymmetrical pulse of a single 5/8 measure. From this initial impulse, the eagle rises, carried by powerful currents, gliding between towering mountain peaks and vast landscapes far below. Throughout the work, intense flapping moments alternate with passages of broad reflection, wings spread wide. The middle section takes place at dusk and night, when the eagle returns to its nest — driven not by conquest but by a purpose: to protect, provide food and dream of a future for the newborn chicks. The eagle embodies strength, focus and unwavering determination. It stands for truth, integrity and the courage to choose the higher path. The Eagle’s Flight is both a musical journey through the air and a reminder of the ideals that lift us above the ordinary.
